A boy from Samastipur, Bihar, picked up a cricket bat for the first time at the age of four. The 14-year-old's father, Sanjeev Suryavanshi, a farmer, went to extraordinary lengths to nurture his son’s passion for the game, even selling land and building a practice arena for him. From these humble beginnings to breaking a world record during the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025, Vaibhav’s unwavering dedication and relentless hard work etched his name into cricket history.
The young Rajasthan Royals sensation recently scored a 35-ball century, shattering the record for the least number of balls taken by an Indian to score a ton in the IPL. He is the youngest cricketer in the world to slam a century in T20 cricket. He has now made 151 runs in only three matches, at an average of 75.50 and a strike rate of 222.05, with the best score of 101*.
"I am what I am because of my parents," Suryavanshi said in a video on the official IPL site after his 38-ball 101 in Jaipur. "My mother used to sleep for three hours, wake up at 2am, prepare food for me. My father quit his job, my elder brother took over the job. We had limited means, but my father backed me to succeed. Whatever results you are seeing today, my success is all because of my parents.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi Creates IPL History
Vaibhav Suryavanshi entered the 2025 IPL auction with a base price of ₹30 lakh. For the first time in the league’s 16-year history, a player as young as him was registered. In a heated bidding war against the Delhi Capitals, the Rajasthan Royals emerged victorious, securing Vaibhav Suryavanshi for ₹1.1 crore. Training under legendary cricket mentors Rahul Dravid and Kumar Sangakkara marks another milestone in Vaibhav’s budding career.
Bihar's Ranji coach, Pramod Kumar, offered a glimpse into Vaibhav’s extraordinary persona as both a player and a person:
"He is the kind of player who seems to have come to earth just to play cricket and leave. He settles for nothing. He hardly speaks, but ask him about cricket, and he can talk endlessly. He never rests on the ground. Even during lunch or tea breaks, he’s either practicing fielding, knocking, or stretching with a senior player."
Vaibhav’s professional journey began with his debut in the Cooch Behar Trophy in 2023, representing Bihar. He later participated in a quadrangular series featuring India U-19 A & B, Bangladesh U-19, and England U-19. In 2024, he was part of India U19's match against Australia in Chennai, where he smashed a 58-ball century. With five first-class matches under his belt, he met the selection criteria for the IPL.
