During the international break in the men’s game, the team switched to Old Trafford, which usually plays their Women’s Super League matches at Leigh Sports Village.

“It’s an amazing experience to play in Europe because of the rich history in football and a stadium like Old Trafford holds that richness, that history,” United striker Christen Press, an American international, told the club's website.

Lauren James made the score 1-0 just after the break. She rose to flick home Maria Thorisdottir's header from a corner to claim victory over struggling West Ham.

The next goal thumped in when the USA forward Christen Press was slipped through by Jackie Groenen six minutes later.

James, one of England's promising young players, was rewarded for her fine performance in the first half, as she became the first woman to score at Old Trafford.  The 19-year-old scored the first goal for Manchester United Women in the Championship, the WSL, the FA Cup and now at Old Trafford.

The historic day saw Old Trafford host a Women's Super League match for the first time after the women's soccer game during the 2012 London Olympics.

Manchester United entered the match in third place, holding the last Women's Champions League spot.
