Tim Paine resigns as test captain: Australian Test cricket captain Tim Paine announced his resignation on November 19 at a press conference in Hobart. Paine resigned over an inappropriate "private text exchange" from November 2017 with a then-colleague. The allegations against Paine were made by a former Cricket Tasmania employee.
According to Cricket Tasmania, the incident came to light after a formal charge of theft was levied against that employee in mid-2018.
Pain, who is 36-year-old, was appointed the 46th Australian Test captain in March 2018. In the press conference, he said, "Today, I'm announcing my decision to stand down as the captain of the Australian men's Test team," adding, "It's an incredibly difficult decision but the right one for me, my family and cricket.
Here are ten things to know about why Paine resigned suddenly:
- Paine was involved in an "inappropriate" text exchange with a colleague in 2017.
- The incident was investigated by the Cricket Australia (CA) integrity unit investigation. According to the cricketer, he participated in the investigation "fully and openly".
- According to the cricketer, that investigation and the Cricket Tasmania HR investigation found no breach of the Cricket Australia code of conduct.
- However, the cricketer spoke with his wife, Bonnie Maggs and family, "...am enormously grateful for their forgiveness and support," he said.
- But just when the cricketer thought that the case was shut, he came to know that this private text was going to go public.
- Recounting the 2017 incident from his perspective, the cricketer apologised to his wife, family and "the other party" for the "hurt and pain" he has caused.
- Although he still hopes to play as wicketkeeper-batsman in the Ashes series. While Paine has resigned as the captain but remains a member of the Australian cricket team.
- CA, in a statement, said that the board has accepted his resignation and will now appoint a new captain. According to Australian media, Pat Cummins remains the frontrunner for the role.
- In a statement, Richard Freudenstein, the CA Chair said, "Tim felt it was in the best interests of his wife and Australian cricket to take this decision to step down as captain," adding, "CA does not condone this type of language or behaviour. Despite the mistake he made, Tim has been an exceptional leader since his appointment and the Board thanks him for his distinguished service. Tim will continue to be available for selection in the Test team through the Ashes summer."
