The 43-year-old hypersensitive woman got a bout of vomiting and severe headache. She needed immediate medical attention and was rushed to the emergency of Sir Ganga Ram hospital in Delhi, on May 20, 2021. However, the woman's condition worsened. The doctors conducted several tests on her, and it was revealed that she had a severe brain haemorrhage. Despite several attempts of resuscitation, she was declared brain dead.

The news hit the family hard, as she was the only sister, amongst seven siblings in the family. She is survived by a 21-year-old son and her husband.

The family then went for counselling and decided to donate her organs. They wanted to make sure that she gives life to others, even in her death. The woman was corona negative.

Dr Naimish N Mehta, Co-Chairman, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation at the hospital, said: "There is a huge waiting list for cadaver organs, and with Covid-19 pandemic, organ donation rate has reduced remarkably across the country. Currently, there are 179 patients waiting for Cadaver Liver and 484 patients waiting for Cadaver Kidney transplantation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Organ donation rate in India varies from 0.65 to 1 per million population while it is upto 35 pmp in Spain and 26 pmp in the USA."

Soon after, a team of doctors led by Dr Mehta, retrieved the woman's organs. Her liver was then transplanted into a 58-year-old man, who had been waiting for almost two years. One kidney was transplanted into a patient at the Sri Ganga Hospital itself, while the other organs were transported to other hospitals in the Delhi NCR region.

UP woman donates her organs to five people

Earlier this year, a brain-dead woman in Uttar Pradesh donated her organs to five people. The 44-year-old woman was suffering from a brain aneurysm. Her heart, liver, kidneys, and lungs, saved critically ill patients residing in Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi.

Recently, a 93-year-old in Kolkata became the first woman in India, to donate her body for COVID-19 research.
