Wu was reportedly arrested and charged in August of last year. In June, his case was heard in closed-door court. In July 2021, Du Meizhu, a prominent figure in the beauty sector, made accusations against Wu. The lady claimed on social media that the musician and actor raped her while she was intoxicated and 17 years old.

Du further charged him with doing the same to two additional young women, both of whom were minors. Wu initially denied the allegations, and the police reportedly felt sorry for him. Two weeks later, the Chaoyang District People's Procurator's Office in Beijing, however, made a formal announcement announcing that Wu's detention had been authorised following a legal inquiry.

In China, rape is normally punished by a term of three to ten years in prison, but, in very egregious circumstances, the punishment may include incarceration or even the death penalty. Sex with three or more people over the age of 16 is considered group licentiousness and entails a five-year prison sentence.

Wu was a Canadian citizen while being a Chinese native. He became well-known as a member of the Chinese-language offshoot of the Korean boyband EXO. Kris Wu's name change has a purpose. He changed his Chinese legal name from Li Jiahéng to Wu Yifan for private reasons, according to reports.
