World through their lenses - Our five favourites on world photography day

They have their own unique style, perspective and angle to "shoot" things. Looking at the world through their lenses is no less of an exhibition at home indeed. Managing to capture a feeling than just an image is what they do best. Homai Vyarawalla AKA Dalda 13 (the license plate of her car) was regarded as the first woman photographer of India. At the time when women were not encouraged to study, let alone work she was the only woman with her camera to capture the independence movement.

This World Photography Day, we bring to you some of our favourite female photographers in India. These ladies have an eye for finding the right frame.

Nayantara Parikh 

A Delhi girl, Nayantara moved to New York to pursue her cinematography dream and soon started off working in feature films, music videos, advertisements. Until 2014, when her interests "clicked" with still photography. She has worked with names like Mumford & Sons, Jimmy Fallon, Heather Graham and the likes. Her work has even been features in magazines like Vogue, Elle and Harpers Bazaar. Her works are absolutely fascinating and weave a story for the viewer.

Bhumika Bhatia

What she does? Fine art photography. Her approach to a photograph is unique, while she looks for a story behind a frame. Her fascination with fine art comes with her love for romanticism, sensitivity, Tim Burton. Let's take a look at some of her work.

Dayanita Singh

A Delhi resident, this 1961 born lady photographer uses images to portray and showcase society; culture and truth. She produces black and white images to add more character to her work. One of her cherished projects has been a series of work with a eunuch, Mona Ahmed, whom she photographed for 13 years!

Ketki Sheth

This Mumbai based photographer has been capturing frames for about 20 years now. Her work is that of portraits which involves building a rapport with your subject. Ketki does a fine job through her lenses and showcases more than just a mere image to the world.

Luke. I'm five years old. We live in De Grey Station. I love driving out on the station with Grandad we go see if the pumps have water, and if it’s down we fix it, and sometimes we do that with my dad in his Hilux. My horse’s name is Hanna and she is not allowed in the house yard. We always brush it down after we ride.

Anita Khemka

She works to get social issues out in the open with giving them words. A picture is worth a thousand words, right? She works with prostitutes, sexual minorities, mentally handicapped individuals, and HIV positive subjects. Through her lens she portrays their daily life that is not so different from the rest of the world.
