On October 21, Wonder Woman will turn 75. On this occasion, the iconic comic character will be officially declared as the new honorary ambassador for the empowerment of women and girls for the United Nations. The event is to be held at the UN headquarters in New York and shall be attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson and some “surprise” guests, reportedly all those actors who have played Wonder Woman on screen over the years.

The UN is all set to launch its new International Campaign supporting Sustainable Development Goal #5, which is to “achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”.

Wonder Woman was a creation of William Moulton Marston and was first tested on screen in October 1941. In a report in The Guardian, publisher DC Comics was quoted saying “we meant to test her appeal at a time when female superheroes were rare”, but the character “quickly broke out and headlined her own title by the next year”.

Comic sites have welcomed UN's decision with open arms. Famous comic site Mary Sue, in a statement, said that it is “a great, easily recognizable symbol of what women can become once freed from a patriarchal society”.
