In West Bengal's Parijat Nagar, Purba Bardhaman district a woman gets her tree married saying that she brought it up as her son. The tree is a Banyan tree in Purba Bardhaman's Memari. It was dressed for the marriage ceremony and had a priest officiate its marriage.

This incident, though seemingly insignificant, becomes a valuable piece of news owing to the treatment shown towards trees by humans. With the current scale of deforestation that has been taking place, there are few instances of humans being appreciative of trees.

Unfortunately, trees have been used to marry women off for cleansing them of any impurities before marriage. The practice of women marrying trees has been prevalent and endorsed by astrologists so that the woman is not 'harmful' to her husband should she marry him.

This instance however is markedly different, this tree was given its own marriage ceremony after being reared as a son by an old woman.

The woman had been looking after the Banyan tree for a long time. The tree started growing branches and the woman felt that it was an ideal time to get her son married.

Woman Gets Her Tree Married In An Official Wedding Ceremony

Rekha Devi conveyed to news sources that she raised the Banyan tree ever since it was a sapling and grew attached to it. Therefore she started identifying the tree as her son despite having two other daughters.

One fine day Dekha Devi happened to find a potential bride for her 'son' resting at its base. She then took financial help from other members of the village and decided to get her son married in an official marriage ceremony.

She conveyed that her husband also wished to see their son married. However, post her husband's demise this responsibility fell on her shoulders.

She shares her belief that her son will reap all her sins when she goes to heaven. It is said that those that have a Banyan tree are blessed with that fortune.

On the day of her son's wedding, Rekha Devi dressed her son in a dhoti sari and put red vermillion powder on his body.

Many locals including Rekha Devi's friends and acquaintances had gathered as witnesses to the marriage ceremony and expressed their joy at the union.
