As per the reports, the woman was booked for begging and involving her children too in the crime and was sent to jail on remand. She was caught on the streets while begging with her seven-year-old daughter while her husband and other two children fled the spot. The police recovered Rs 19,600 from her and Rs 600 from her daughter.

The seven-year-old daughter has been sent to an NGO. Apart from this daughter, the woman has four other children aged 10,8,3 and 2.  While arguing to defend her actions, Indra told the NGO, "Instead of starving, we chose to beg. It is better than stealing."

The shocking revelations made by the woman

After being caught, Indra revealed the strategies she used to follow while begging. She said that she used to position her older children at the bustling Luv Kush Square of Indore. She chose this area because it is the transit point for devotees and pilgrims visiting the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain. Since the construction of Mahakal Lok, the number of pilgrims has increased attracting more alm-seekers.

Indra also revealed that she acquired a two-storey house and an agricultural plot in Rajasthan's Kota through begging. This activity also got her a smartphone and a motorcycle which is ridden by her husband.

The scandal of begging in Indore

The NGO that helped in breaking the scandal is working with Indore Municipal Corporation. It has been collecting data on approximately 7,000 beggars from 38 squares of Indore, half of which are children. Rupali Jain, a volunteer of the NGO revealed that these beggars collectively earn a staggering 20 crore annually.
