His wife, Renuka Srivastava told ANI, "He had covered a story after which 3-4 people started following him. He had submitted an application to ADG regarding the same. Neither any action was taken nor security was given."

The Uttar Pradesh local police called Sulabh Srivastava's death a result of a "motorcycle accident".

Srivastava, who worked for the Indian agency ABP news on its regional arm ABP Ganga, suspected an attack on him one day prior to the incident and informed the senior police officials that he felt threatened following his recent coverage of liquor mafias in the district.

However, no security actions were taken for him, according to his wife Renuka Srivastava.

The local police claimed that Srivastava fell from his motorcycle near a brick kiln when he was returning home after media coverage, at around 11 pm at night on Sunday. Some passerby lifted him from the road and then called his friends from his phone and called an ambulance too.

As soon as he was taken to a district hospital, the doctors pronounced him dead, according to reports.

"It is an unfortunate incident. If anyone is involved, action will be taken. Based on the evidence, it doesn't look like murder," ADG Prem Prakash told ANI, "But family members are alleging his murder. Eyewitnesses informed us about the accident."

According to the NDTV report, another official reported that initial investigations suggest that the death occurred due to Srivastava's head injury during the collision of his bike with a handpump. Other angles are reportedly being investigated too.

According to a photo taken at the accident scene, the journalist was seen to be lying on the ground with injuries to his face. Srivastava's clothes were almost off with his shirt and trousers unbuttoned.

The Pratapgarh police have registered an FIR against those who were behind the death of the TV journalist who are yet to be named by the Kowali Police Station.

She also alleged that her husband had received threats to his life for three days and that the police had taken no action despite being informed of the threats in writing.
