Irani was associated with Tata Steel for 43 years and retired from the board of Tata Steel in June 2011. He will be remembered as a visionary leader who contributed to the growth and development of the steel industry in India.

Besides Tata Steel and Tata Sons, Irani also served as a Director of several Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors and Tata Teleservices.

He is survived by his wife Daisy Irani and his three children, Zubin, Niloufer and Tanaaz.

Who is Daisy Irani?

Born in Jamshedpur, Daisy finished her education at Sacred Heart Convent School and took to Chennai for her higher studies where she also did a year’s course in catering.

After that, she donned the role of a banker albeit for a short time. That was her first foray into the public and professional sphere. Daisy, however, knew at the back of her mind that she would be back in Jamshedpur before long.

Only two years in the banking job, she was married to JJ Irani, a turning point in her life.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Daisy said she left her work as she believed in spending quality time with her family. “Even my husband with all his erratic work schedule ensured that he spent at least half an hour with the children once they were growing up,” she says, adding: “There can be no substitute for the love and time that the parents can spend on their children.”

She, however, soon decided to take a more interactive and positive role in society.

As a vice president and then president of the All-India Women’s Conference, Daisy was at the helm of affairs looking after Shishu Niketan. “Working there gave me immense pleasure as I was able to interact with children, who I think are god’s representatives on earth,” she once said.

JJ Irani was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2007 for his contribution to the industry. He was also the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Government of India in 2008 as an acknowledgement of his services in the area of metallurgy.
