The Walmart Foundation and Swasti Health Resource Center, who have been training women with life skills in 30 factories across Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, recently announced that they have helped over 12,000 women in India. The programme has been assisting women in understanding life skills in communication, hygiene, reproductive health, occupational health and safety, identifying personal strengths and gender sensitivity.
According to a report by Business Standard, the Walmart Foundation has contributed over $79 million in grants in helping women though such programmes , out of which, about $10 million has been spent in India. According to the same report, Nancy Kielty, vice-president, Global Sourcing, Walmart, said, "We are committed to the communities and people in our supply chain. So it is important to us that this training is helping to empower women."

The programme plans to help 60,000 women in 150 factories across India, Bangladesh, China, El Salvador and Honduras by the end of 2016. This is a part of the Walmart Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) initiative, that aims to train one million women in total. The initiative till date, has helped provide job training, market access and career opportunities to women from all over the world.
Nancy Kielty also said, “We are also providing free a curriculum developed by Care NGO to factories interested in providing job readiness and life skill training to its women workers for greater impact on our global supply chain.” Swasti director Chandra Shekhar Gowda added, “Walmart’ Foundation’s commitment to economic empowerment of women through partnership is impressive and we appreciate its support to us in training women in India and helping them to make right choices to lead healthy lives.”
