Violet Baruah was promoted to the Inspector General (IG) position by the Home Department Of Assam on Monday, December 27. Her tenure as an IG in Assam Police will begin from January 1, 2022. Violet Baruah is also the recipient of the President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2021 and the President's Medal for Meritorious Service in 2012.
Violet Baruah is currently posted in the Kokrajhar district of Assam as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (BTAD). She will start her tenure as the senior-most woman IPS officer in January 2022. The official notification from the side of the Home Department of Assam also states that she will be a part of 'Super Time Scale-II of IPS'.

Violet Baruah told NDTV that she has always taken challenges in all posting opportunities that came her. She did not refuse any posting location and hence, was always out of Guwahati for most part of her service tenure.
Violet Baruah joined the Assam police forces in 1992 and was promoted to IPS in 2004. She talks about the need of 'gender mainstreaming' and that women should take the initiative and come forward in high numbers to take up jobs in police forces.
In her police service tenure, she served in four districts namely, Cachar, Goalpara, Morigaon and Barpeta. The 59-year old officer was also a part of Crime Investigation Department (CID) in Assam Police.
The government notification also said that along with Violet Baruah, eight other Deputy IG's were also promoted to the position of IG. The names of the newly appointed IG's are Mridulananda Sarma, Anand Prakash Tiwari, Nitul Gogoi, Dilip Kumar Dey, Lachit Barua, Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan, Deboraj Upadhaya and Diganta Barah.
