Actor Vinod Khanna passed away on April 27th after a brief illness. He was reportedly admitted for acute dehydration. Some weeks ago a picture of a very thin and frail Khanna was circulated on social media.
Born on 6 October 1946, in Peshawar when it was part of British India (now in Pakistan)
He was born in a Punjabi family to Kamla and Kishanchand Khanna, a businessman running the textiles business.
When the partition happened, he moved to Mumbai and went to St Mary's school. His family shifted a few times to Delhi and he moved with them.
For his college, Khanna returned to Mumbai. He graduated with a commerce degree from Sydenham College, Mumbai. However he remained fascinated by the film industry and decided to explore it.
Vinod Khanna debuted in Sunil Dutt's 1968 film Man Ka Meet as a villain
He appeared in 141 films between 1968 and 2013.
Khanna was the lead in many superhit films and is best remembered for his performance in films like Mere Apne, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Gaddaar, Jail Yatra, Imitihaan, Inkaar, Kuchhe Dhaage, Amar Akbar Anthony, Qurbani, Kudrat, Dayavan and others
Khanna was a devotee of Osho Rajneesh and reportedly in 1982, at the peak of his film career, Khanna temporarily quit the film industry to follow him.
In 1987 after a 5 year gap, he returned to the film industry with two back to back hit films Insaaf and Satyamev Jayate.
In 1997, Khanna joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected from Gurdaspur constituency in Punjab in the next year's Lok Sabha poll
He also served as the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism and Minister of State for External Affairs.
