Key Takeaways:

  • Actress Vidya Balan is all set to play Shakuntala Devi in her biopic, to be released on Amazon Prime Video India.
  • Shakuntala Devi is known for her innate ability to make incredibly complex calculations within seconds.
  • The announcement comes a day after the streaming platform announced the release of Shoojit Sircar’s comedy Gulabo Sitabo, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana.

The talented Vidya first revealed the look back in late 2019 when she sported a short bob, portraying the mathematical wizard, and calculating sums on her fingertips.

Talking about the role, Vidya Balan had earlier said, “I am extremely excited to play the human-computer, Shakuntala Devi. She was truly someone who embraced her individuality, had a strong feminist voice and braved many a naysayer to reach the pinnacle of success.”

Shakuntala Devi was one of India’s finest mathematicians ever, who could multiply and calculate numbers in her head way faster than normal brains can fathom. “But what truly fascinates me is that you wouldn’t normally associate a fun person with Math…and she completely turns that perception on its head,” Vidya further added.

“I am extremely excited to play the human-computer, Shakuntala Devi. She was truly someone who embraced her individuality, had a strong feminist voice and braved many a naysayer to reach the pinnacle of success.”

Initially scheduled to release on 8 May, the film aims to celebrate the story of a woman in science in India.

Shakuntala Devi also advocated for the rights of gay people in the country. She also authored the book – The world of homosexuals in 1977. Devi was married to Kolkata-based IAS officer, Paritosh Bannerji, who it was later revealed was homosexual. She was the first gay rights activist, and her book is arguably the first book written in India demanding decriminalisation of homosexuality.

Fans will love to watch the combination of the two finest we believe, Shakuntala Devi who made math fun and Vidya Balan, who with her remarkable acting skills has been winning the audiences’ hearts with every performance.
