Vidisha: 40 People Fall In Well While Watching Rescue Of 8-Year-Old Girl, Four Dead

Vidisha accident: It was late on Thursday when, in a tragic incident, an eight-year-old girl fell into the 40-feet-deep well while playing in Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha. The incident was reported from the Lalpathar area of the district around 7:30 in the evening. Now, it is being reported that at least 40 people, who had gathered around the well to watch others try to pull out the child, fell into the well after its boundary wall caved in due to the pressure, police said late on Friday.

About 23 people have been rescued and at least four people died in the mishap. Several others were injured, of them, 13 people have been admitted to hospital, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said. Another body was recovered later, taking the death toll to four, officials said on Friday.

Earlier, CM Chauhan had extended his condolences to those who lost their lives in the tragic accident. He also assured that rescue work is still underway at the site of accident. "I am continuously monitoring the situation," he tweeted adding that he has also ordered a high-level probe into the accident.

According to the villagers, a girl fell into a well late on Thursday evening while playing. After that, a massive crowd gathered around the well to watch the child being rescued. The wall collapsed due to the weight of the crowd, who had also fallen into the well, Hindustan Times reported.

Vidisha accident: There is still no word on the condition of the young girl who first fell into the well while playing or the remaining people who went down after her.

“She is still in the well,” a police officer said, pointing that it was not clear if she was injured due to the fall when the boundary wall collapsed and the people who fell into the well moments later.

Preliminary reports suggest the rescue operation, which was later led by personnel from the National Disaster Response Force and the state-level disaster response force, was suspended for some time after a tractor being used by them for the same also fell into the well.
