Venezuelan political leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote democracy and nonviolent political engagement in her country. The Nobel Committee commended her “for her commitment to peaceful civic participation and her dedication to the rights and dignity of the Venezuelan people.”
A Peaceful Advocate for Change
Venezuela has faced significant political and economic challenges over the past two decades. Amid this environment, Machado has emerged as a prominent voice advocating for democratic reform through dialogue, citizen engagement, and peaceful action.
A former member of Venezuela’s National Assembly, Machado founded Vente Venezuela, a political movement that emphasises civic participation, transparency, and accountability in governance. Despite facing political restrictions and public criticism, she has consistently promoted peaceful solutions and constitutional reform.
The Nobel Committee highlighted Machado’s perseverance and her ability to inspire civic hope. In response to the announcement, she said:
“I am just part of a huge movement. I’m humbled, I’m grateful and I’m honoured.”
Her words underscored that her work represents not only her personal efforts but also the broader movement of Venezuelans advocating for democratic rights and civic freedoms.
Machado’s political perspective includes engagement with international allies she sees as supporters of democracy. She publicly acknowledged the current U.S. President, Donald Trump, as an ally of the Venezuelan people in their struggle for democracy. She has also expressed support for Israel’s right to self-defence and its leadership under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
A Symbol of Peaceful Resistance
The Nobel Peace Prize has drawn attention both in Venezuela and internationally. Human rights organisations and world leaders praised the award as recognition of peaceful activism and democratic leadership. At the same time, the diversity of opinion in Venezuela underscores the complexity of the nation’s political landscape.
Machado’s recognition places her among global figures celebrated for advocating nonviolence, civic responsibility, and democratic resilience. Her award serves as a reminder that meaningful change can be achieved through persistent, principled action.
As Venezuela continues to navigate its political challenges, María Corina Machado’s Nobel Peace Prize highlights the enduring importance of dialogue, hope, and the collective pursuit of democratic ideals.
