At her hearing in Massachusetts, the prosecutor -- Maryclare Flynn -- accused Carter of sending dozens of text messages to her boyfriend, Conrad Roy.

Her boyfriend killed himself by inhaling carbon monoxide produced by a water pump in his truck. He had texted Carter before doing so, saying that he was scared and had got out of the truck. Carter texted him to ‘get back in’.

Her boyfriend had a history of mental illness and was found dead in a Kmart parking lot a day after he committed suicide.

The prosecutor has accused Carter of playing a ’sick game’ with her boyfriend, Conrad's life, and has accused her of wanting to get attention and sympathy by playing the part of the ‘grieving girlfriend’.

In one of the text messages, Carter wrote: You’re finally going to be happy in heaven. No more pain. It’s okay to be scared and it’s normal. I mean, you’re about to die.”

She also said: “I thought you wanted to do this. The time is right and you’re ready …  just do it babe.”

She asked him when he was going to kill himself more than 40 times.

“She reasoned him out of his reservations... She mocked him when he chose to delay his death,” said the prosecutor.

“People who commit suicide don’t think this much. They just do it.”

Carter told her friends that she was talking to him on the phone when he did it, and didn’t stop him. She waited as he cried out in pain and died.

After his death, she got a lot of support on Facebook. She even wrote “Lol I’m famous” on Facebook after planning a fundraising baseball game to honour Roy.

Carter’s defense team says that Roy was ‘on the path to take his own life’ anyway and that Carter was struggling with her own mental health issues. He had attempted to commit suicide before, they said.
