The energy sector is missing out on 50% of the talent

Just as the lack of women in boardrooms is hampering the development of the female gender and the market values of companies; the worst impact it has had is probably on the energy sector. The sector, according to a report by Ernst and Young, has been underperforming for the past five years. The reason being no diversity in the boardrooms as only 4% of the executive level employees; are women.

Alison Kay, the author of the published report believes this is not just a gender issue but a business issue. Agreeing with Kay, José Nadeau, the first female chair of the World Energy Congress, says, “It’s so important for boards, whether private or public, to be representative of society. One of the main roles of a board is to be able to anticipate change in order for the company to adapt.” She adds that even though there are leaders who promote this idea, when they leave, the agenda quickly changes from diversity to something else.

Clearly, this not just a leadership issue. For the sector to progress there is a need for a more diverse set of employees. Currently, over 96% of the executive directors are men and no known efforts are being taken to change this. Kay told The Guardian, “It’s very clear in the energy industry that the models of today are no longer fit for purpose … if organizations don’t diversify their boardrooms they're not going to be able to address the challenges.”

Where we probably do have the luxury of time in advancing women at the corporate level, our environmental restrictions don’t exactly give us the liberty to enjoy the same. As we move towards an unsure future we need to find ways that would help us advance more women in the energy sector at a faster pace. The only available quick fix seems to be hiring women from other sectors, for now.
