TATA Steel is the leading global steel company. As per the media reports, the company recognises the importance of "breaking the glass ceiling and mainstreaming transgender people” in society.

In a notification for the job application, the TATA Steel company said, "Transgender candidates with any of the following qualifications can apply: Matriculation in English or ITI or graduation in any discipline or diploma in engineering in any discipline from any institute recognised by AICTE or UGC… or Degree in BE/B Tech in any discipline from any institute, recognised by AICTE or UGC."

The last date for the application is February 15. All the shortlisted candidates will have to undergo a selection process which will include a written test and an interview.

Transgender employees were hired by the company earlier also

In February 2022, the steel company had onboarded 12 crane operator trainees from the LGBTQIA+ community hence expanding the transgender employee base at its plant in Kalinganagar, Odisha.

Before this, Tata Steel's captive mining division at Jharkhand's West Bokaro hired 14 transgender people as Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) operators. Talking about promoting inclusivity among the employees at its plants, the steel giant said, “The well-thought intervention has not only broached the unorthodox subject of hiring transgender in the blue-collar workforce but also provided a map for other organisations to navigate the difficult path to being inclusive in the truest sense."

TATA Steel's journey to acquire a diverse workforce

The journey towards making the employee base inclusive by hiring people from minor communities began with improving the gender diversity ratio by inducing women into the core roles at the various plants of the company. Then, the company moved on to hiring transgender employees to upscale the effort to acquire inclusivity.

TATA Steel aims to acquire a 25 per cent diverse workforce by the year 2025. Currently, the company has an employee base of 77,000 spread across five continents.
