Taliban’s restriction on women also barred girls from attending school from sixth grade after they took control of Afghanistan.

Reportedly, the president of Badakhashan University, Naqibullah Qazizada said that Taliban’s violence and unlawful conduct toward the students would be taken care of.

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, and began rolling back the rights of women and girls. Despite facing grave risks, the women began to protest on the streets since Taliban took control.

According to Human Rights Watch, the Taliban responded with brutality from the beginning by beating protesters, detaining and torturing journalists, and disrupting protests. In August 2022, the Taliban cracked down on female protestors who were chanting “Bread, work, freedom” outside the Kabul education ministry building.

The Taliban responded to the protests by firing their weapons into the air to scatter the group of women who were marching. Some of the protesters were chased and beaten with rifle butts.

Earlier this year in August, the Taliban reportedly prohibited female students from registering at institutions in Qatar and Kazakhstan leaving the country. Male students were permitted to leave Afghanistan to continue their education.

The ban marked the Taliban breaking yet another commitment they made to the international community. Taliban top officials also urged women to wear a full-body veil.

Since Taliban took over, Afghan women are no longer allowed to leave their houses unaccompanied by a man. Women who held official posts were told to nominate men from their homes to fill those positions instead.

Schools are required to maintain gender-based segregation. Reportedly, some Taliban officials also prohibited women from using smartphones. Approximately 80 percent of the women who worked in media lost their employment.
