The Switzerland government wants to attract more women for its military force and has decided on scrapping the men's underwear for women's standard army uniform. Women have no other option other than wearing men's underwear.

Swiss female army recruits will now get two different sets of women's underwear

Now Swiss female army members will be provided with two different sets of female underwear for warmer and colder months. This will start from next month onwards.

Women make up only 1 per cent of Switzerland's army, and the Swiss government is aiming to have 10 per cent of women in the army.

Marianne Binder, a member of the Swiss National Council, is confident that such a move will encourage more women to join Switzerland's armed forces.

"The clothing is designed for men, but if the army is really to become more feminine, appropriate measures are needed," Marianne Binder said. She then added that a test phase for the move will begin in April, and the results will be out in May.

Women till now have been forced to make do with men's underwear which can be very loose and uncomfortable for them.

Kaj-Gunnar Sievert, an army spokesman said that clothing and other items issued by the military were becoming outdated. He said that the new underwear for Swiss female army recruits will comprise of a 'short underwear' for summers, and a long one for winters. Earlier, he stated that these changes were being considered in relation to other supplies, such as combat clothing, protective vests and backpacks. "The focus will be on fit and functionality," he said.

“The old generation of uniforms was not geared enough to the specific needs of women,” said Sievert.

“Against this background, the procurement of the latest equipment is just as important for women as it is for men," he added.

Viola Amherd, the defence minister of Switzerland is totally in favour of the move.
