The incident happened on Monday afternoon. The student was out at the lake in Pattandur Agrahara for her post-graduate assignment on the status of the lake. The lake and its surroundings is already infamous for lack of surveillance and repeated incidents of mugging and other illegal actions.

Muggings are reported regularly from around here. If these tenements are illegal, please evict them.”

Improve surveillance and patrolling to make the area safe for women! tweeted Namma Whitefield.

The student became the victim of the lack of surveillance in the area when a man started following her. He flashed at her, gave vulgar signals which posed discomfort and danger for the student. Such incidents render even the public spaces unsafe for women.

The courage and smartness of the student gained her justice

The student’s calmness and rationality during the incident not only saved her from further mishap but also exemplified how such situations should be dealt with. It is awareness about self-defence, safety measures and to act quickly and smartly that is required to tackle harassment cases. Had the student not recorded the video, possibly the police would have rejected her complaint on the basis of lack of evidence.

Sexual harassment: An endless debate

Therefore, like the student’s decisiveness in a crisis situation, awareness about self-defence and courage to report the harassment to the police is the necessity of the hour. However, it is matter of another debate whether we should stop men from harassing women than preparing her to tackle it.
