Margarita Lozano, a well-known Spanish actor, died on February 6 at the age of 91. According to the Lorca town council, the actor died at her home in Puntas de Calnegre.
Actor's friend, Spanish architect Simon Angel Ros who designed her home in the coastal town of Puntas de Calnegre near Lorca, said Lozano passed away “peaceful”, according to a report. “Her heart has been weakening slowly, she did not suffer,” he told local media. Lozano’s only son Paco flew from Italy where he lives, on Saturday to be by her side in her final hours, he added.
Lozano was born in 1931 in Tetuan, Morocco, then a Spanish protectorate, to a father who was a soldier stationed there. She studied design and fashion at first. However, she dropped out of school to pursue acting, her true passion, in Madrid, first in the theatre.
She starred in the 1961 drama Viridiana, directed by famed Spanish director Luis Bunuel and about a young nun ready to assume her final vows. That year, the film earned the top Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival. She travelled to Italy in the late 1960s, acting opposite Clint Eastwood in Pasolini's 1969 drama Pigsty and Sergio Leone's 1964 western A Fistful of Dollars.
She took a decade off to raise her family before returning to Italian cinema in the 1980s, acting in several films directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani.
