After the law student, who accused BJP leader Chinmayanand of harassment, was found in Rajasthan and brought to Delhi, the Supreme Court on Monday asked Uttar Pradesh government to set up Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the allegations. SC has directed that the SIT should be headed by an IG-rank officer.

The Supreme Court has also asked Allahabad High Court to form a bench to monitor the probe by SIT in the two complaints registered in the matter.

The 23-year-old law student was found after being missing for six days. When she went missing, her father, in a written complaint, accused Chinmayanand, who is also the director of the law college she studies in, of sexual harassment. Former three-time MP Chinmayanand’s lawyer, Om Singh has also filed an FIR against the girl alleging extortion.

The bench comprising of Justices R Banumathi and AS Bopanna further ensured that the girl, who was earlier studying LLM from SS Law College in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur, now gets admission in a different college.

The girl had released a video on FB that went viral on August 24. In the video, she claimed to have evidence against Chinmayanand. She says, “A big leader of the saint society, who has destroyed the lives of several girls, has been threatening me with life.” She was allegedly speaking about Chinmayanand.

The SC on Friday evening instructed the Delhi Police to send a team to get her parents and arrange her meeting with the SC. The judges asked authorities of the short-stay home to allow her to use the landline phone to speak to her parents but barred her from meeting anyone else till the court met her on Monday.

On August 28, UP Police booked Chinmayanand under Sections 364 (kidnapping or abduction with the purpose of murder) and 506 (Criminal intimidation).

The Supreme Court has also asked Allahabad High Court to form a bench to monitor the probe by SIT in the two complaints registered in the matter.

“We have registered an FIR against former minister Swami Chinmayanand and we have already deployed police teams to track the accused and recover the girl. The hostel room will also be seized and the girl’s records checked. We have provided security to the girl’s family to ensure that they are not threatened by the accused,” SSP S Channappa told TOI.

While the girl went missing after the FB video went viral, the college authorities claim that she has been absent since August 5. Her house is located three kilometers away from the college but the girl’s father said that she chose to live in the hostel because she took up a job in the college to help with the e-library after her classes and was also taking coaching sessions.

Chinmayanand compared himself with former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar and said that it is a conspiracy to frame him just like it happened with Sengar.
