Sakshi Malik

Olympic Bronze medallist Sakshi Malik has been receiving accolades since she returned from Rio. Her state of Haryana as well as many government agencies have been trying to get associated with her to gain fame. Recently Meham Chaubisi of Sarv Khap Mahapanchayat invited Sakshi and her family to the panchayat where they wanted to facilitate her. However, Sakshi did not attend the event, preferring to stay away from the political connotations of attending such an event. In a clarification, her father stated to Times of India ,"'Her activities as well as participation (in programmes) is only limited to wrestling. We are totally against any kind of politics, hence Sakshi will not join any such programme. We respect the community , but Sakshi is a national asset," he added.

Immediately after coming back from Rio, at a grand felicitation function at Bahadurgarh, Sakshi was handed a cheque of Rs 2.5 crore by the Chief Minister. She was also appointed as Haryana’s brand ambassador for ‘Beti Padhao-Beti Bachao’ programme. However, she declined the khap invitation, which no doubt would have angered many in her community. She is related to Mahem since her younger days when as a child she lived in Mohkra village but it is obvious that for her wrestling is of a greater importance than politics.
