The family of the woman claimed that they searched for oxygen beds in some of the best private as well as civic hospitals and none of them were able to provide oxygen beds for the patient.
The woman was identified as Nanda Binawat who hailed from the city of Pune. She had undergone a test for Covid-19 on April 10, two days before her death. On the night of April 11, her condition deteriorated and she was unable to breathe. She needed an external support system for breathing. Her husband immediately drove her around the city in search of hospitals. However, even after searching for about five hours, they were unsuccessful.
The woman's nephew said, "They went to all top hospitals like Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Janhengir Hospital in Pune city and to Aditya Birla hospital located in Pimpri-Chinchwad. None of the hospitals had an oxygen bed. The doctors in those hospitals said her oxygen level had dipped and she badly needed an oxygen bed."
The woman showed her first symptoms on April 6. "The local clinic doctors advised her home isolation. However, she became weak and her fever persisted, the doctors her advised to undergo a test on April 10. The family paid Rs 500 extra to get the test report quickly," the nephew said.
Shortage of Health Facilities In Pune
In another recent
incident, a 35-year-old woman died after delivering twins due to a shortage of ICU beds in Pune. The woman was admitted to the PCMC-run YCM hospital in the Pimpri-Chinchwad area three days prior to her delivery.
The woman underwent a cesarean operation on April 6. The surgery was very uneventful as her condition deteriorated after delivering twins. Her oxygen levels dipped which demanded treatment from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). However, the hospital failed to provide her ICU beds at the moment and asked them to look for other hospitals. Unfortunately, when a bed was finally arranged for her, she passed away.
