In the interview, Priyanka Chopra mentions how she desperately wanted to be a part of the venture. "I remember reading the book and it leaving a massive mark on my mind because it's so poetic and specific, at the same time. There are so many little things from the book that we all remember. When my agents told me that this book is being made into a movie and would I be interested, and I jumped on it and I pursued the film actually," Chopra said.

She further added, "I love the idea of taking the stories based out of India, which I can completely relate with, to the global audience. Like the book did. It sold more outside India than it did inside India. I feel that it was that story and I want to be attached to stuff like that. So I actively pursued it and I went after it."

Producer Mukul Deora chose his college-friend director Ramin Bahrani to be the helm-man of the film. Bahrani did depths of research while reading the rough drafts of the book before it was published. That's how he gradually conceived the book into a film. While talking about Bahrani, Deora said, "He is very dedicated to adapt it into a film."

In another interview with Indian Express, Priyanka Chopra stated, "It (The book) had a profound effect on me. It made me uncomfortable and made me think about a part of the world that we sort of desensitise ourselves to."
