According to the latest reports, Dubai’s Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein has left her husband Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the country’s crown prince and leader and also one of the richest men in the world. The princess is currently seeking asylum in Europe. This came after one of the Sheikh’s daughter’s Princess Latifa fled Dubai last year, when she vanished off the coast of Goa.

Princess Haya is the first Arab and first woman ever to become Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed her a UN Messenger of Peace in 2007.

The Human Rights Watchdog’s CEO Radha Stirling said, “Whenever someone applies for political asylum, obviously, it is because their lives are in danger, and because they have suffered severe abuses and violations of their human rights. We already know that Princess Latifa, Sheikh Mohammed’s daughter, fled the UAE seeking asylum and alleging unspeakable abuse at the hands of her father. Now, it seems, Princess Haya, Sheikh Mohammed’s wife, has also fled the country and sought refuge in Germany.”

According to the Daily Beast, the princess, 45, who is the sister of King of Jordan, secretly fled to Europe with her son and heir Zayed, 7, and daughter Al Jalila, 11. Princess Latifa accused the royal family of imprisoning her and torturing her last year, while she was citing the reason for her escape in a YouTube video. While on camera, she said that she feels positive about the future. The princess added, “It is a start of my claiming my life, my freedom, freedom of choice.”

Princess Haya has also taken £31million to start a new life, as she is reportedly taking asylum in Europe. The princess was not seen since February and hence is now expected to be in Germany, as the reports cite. According to The Sun, she has also immediately filed for divorce as she took asylum.

This, however, is expected to raise a diplomatic crisis between Germany and the UAE. Sheik is Vice-president and the Prime Minister as well as being the ruler of the city of Dubai. He is said to have asked authorities in Berlin to return the princess, son Zayed, and daughter Al Jalila, to the UAE. The authorities there have refused and are also protecting the princess. Princess Haya is said to have told friends that she chose to flee to Germany as she “didn’t trust UK authorities.”

Princess Haya wed Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai in Amman, Jordan on 10 April, 2004. She is said to be interested in horse riding and started it at the age of 13. Princess Haya is the first Arab and first woman ever to become Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed her a UN Messenger of Peace in 2007.
