The cases of women wrongly diagnosed or denied maternal healthcare resulting in harm or fatal incidents are on the rise.

Recently, a 29-year-old pregnant woman delivered a baby while travelling on an express train at the Arakkonam railway station in the Ranipet district of Tamil Nadu. The woman cop on duty at the platform, Parameshwari, helped her give birth before the doctor could arrive.

When Chandini, a pregnant woman, boarded the train at Tiruppatur, she suddenly began to experience labour pains. Her family immediately contacted the travel ticket examiner (TTE), who alerted the railway police at the Arakkonam railway station. The doctor was informed after railway employees brought the woman to the passenger waiting area. However, Chandini gave birth to a child with the assistance of a woman head constable Parameshwari before the doctor could get there.

In another instance, a pregnant woman passed away after she was allegedly refused treatment in a hospital in the Tumakuru district of Karnataka for not having an Aadhaar card or Taayi (maternity) card.

The doctor and hospital staff allegedly refused to admit the 30-year-old woman who was pregnant with twins.
