Russian pregnant women are reportedly migrating in massive numbers to Argentina to give birth to their children, according to Argentina's immigration authorities. In light of Ukraine's invasion, they hope to get citizenship for their newborns.  In addition, Russian pregnant women are being targeted by the authorities, according to the BBC.

According to Florencia Carignano, director of Argentina's immigration office, the nation has commenced a judicial investigation into this "lucrative business" that involves providing Russian parents with Argentine passports.

The official spoke with 33 Russian women who were 32 to 34 weeks pregnant and arrived in Buenos Aires on the same flight, and she revealed that many of them were initially denied entry but later granted entry.

According to the BBC, Argentina has become a popular choice for Russian families looking to grant their kids the benefits of dual citizenship, and according to Florencia Carignano, about 10,500 Russian women who are pregnant have arrived in Amsterdam in the previous year. "Many of them claimed to be in their 33rd or 34th week of pregnancy, and 5,800 of them were in the last three months," he said, adding that about 7,000 women gave birth to their children before returning to Russia.

"The issue is that they come to Argentina, have their children, and then leave without ever coming back. We cannot allow them to blatantly misrepresent themselves to us as tourists when they are not," he said.

Additionally, having an Argentine child expedites the citizenship process for the parents. Currently, only 87 countries allow Russians to travel without a visa. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February of last year, travel to many Western nations has become more challenging for Russians. The EU and Russia's visa facilitation agreement was suspended in September of last year, necessitating more paperwork, longer processing times, and more stringent requirements for visa issuance.

One of the Russian women's attorneys, Christian Rubilar, claimed that the women were "escape from the war." He said that under Putin's regime, refusing to support the war was enough to land a person in jail or send her family members to the front lines of combat.
