Under the PM-CARES for Children scheme funds will be given to children orphaned during COVID-19 after they turn adults, the Prime Minister's Office announced Saturday.
For those who have lost both their parents (or guardians), the centre will provide a monthly stipend once they reach 18 years of age and a lump sum of Rs 10 lakh when they turn 23.
As per the official announcement, the funds will go towards the children's personal, educational and professional needs for a five-year support plan.

Children under 10 years
The notification states the child will be admitted to the nearest Kendriya Vidyalaya as a day scholar. If admission is sought in a private school, the fee will be provided by the PM-CARES fund. The scheme also includes provision of other essentials like uniform, textbooks, etc.
Children between 11-18 years
The child under the PM-CARES for children scheme will be admitted to any residential government school when they turn 11 or older. If still in care of a family member/guardian, the child will be admitted to the nearest Kendriya Vidyalaya or private school. Financial provisions will be taken care of under central funds.
Higher Education
For higher education, the child can obtain education loans as per the existing Education Loan norms, the interest for which will be provided under PM-CARES. Alternatively, scholarships equivalent to other course fees will be provided under central or state government schemes.
Health Insurance
Children who have lost both parents during the pandemic will be enrolled as beneficiaries under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme (PM-JAY). The health insurance cover will total Rs 5 lakhs. The premium amount will be paid for by PM-CARES, till the child comes of legal age.
