Pie Charts: Bakery Puts Gender Inequality Stats On Its Cakes
Pie charts have new meaning when they arrive on your favourite desserts. A Romanian bakery is sweetening the discussion on gender pay gaps by putting statistics on top of their cakes. The crust of the problem lies in few people discussing the serious matter of gender gaps in salaries and society and so with this effort, the bakery has launched what it terms ‘social deserts.’ Suppose one with a social message. “The Misrepresentation Cake,” which notes that men make up 88 percent of Romania’s parliament
“Startup Exclusion Cake,” revealing that the number of Romanian entrepreneurs who are women are a measly 13%
Ad agency MRM/McCann partnered with French-style bakery chain Paul to bring attention to this ongoing struggle with some sweet treats bearing a very sharp message—real pies that double as pie charts outlining the problem. They began with their branch in Romania.
“According to the World Economic Forum 2015 Global Gender Gap Report, Romania was rated No. 114 out of 145 countries in political equality, and scored low also on health and financial inequality,” said MRM/McCann Romania CEO and chief creative officer Nir Refuah, in a statement. “The Bittersweet project takes a mission to spread the data, create awareness, and spark conversation in every household in Romania about the importance of closing this gap.”
