Rashad was earlier serving the university as a guest lecturer and adjunct faculty member. She has been a teacher to Hollywood actors Susan Kelechi-Watson and the late Chadwick Boseman.
The American actor said that she had started teaching at the university at the invitation of Al Freeman Jr, who was a former chair of the department of theater. She recalled that he was a friend, and that they had worked together in a soap opera. She said that when Freeman was teaching at Howard, she was busy filming for The Cosby Show in New York.
Rashad then said that her students taught her a lot. She added they taught her a more than all the teaching she did for them.
