Over 900 People Play Monopoly to Honor Girl Who Died of Cancer.

In a heartwarming tribute that brought together love, community, and childhood memories, over 900 people gathered in Sydney, Australia, to honour a little girl’s love for Monopoly, and in doing so, they made history. Alegra Vasiliou was just six years old when she tragically lost her life in a battle with brain cancer in 2017. One of her favourite things to do was play Monopoly with her parents. To honour her memory and celebrate her life, Alegra’s parents, alongside the Little Legs Foundation, organised a massive event on March 30, bringing together all the Monopoly lovers. This event not only raised awareness for childhood brain cancer but also broke a Guinness World Record.

A Record-Breaking Day

The event saw 918 participants playing Monopoly, all at the same time, at 150 tables, successfully breaking the world record for the most people playing the board game at once. It wasn’t just about setting a record, but it was about bringing people together for a meaningful cause.

Alegra’s mother, Sue-Ellan Vasiliou, shared her heartfelt emotions with the Guinness World Records: “We really wanted to create a space that allowed both young and old to come together, celebrate her, and accomplish something that everyone would be proud of. All whilst raising awareness for the disease that took our daughter, brain cancer.”

She continued, “To say you broke a Guinness World Records title isn’t something very common. To say you have your very own version of Monopoly dedicated to you is even more rare, but Alegra has her very own Army, and together we have the power to do so much in this world.”

To make the event even more special, every participant played on a custom version of the board game titled 'Alegra’s Army’, featuring Alegra’s photo on it. These exclusive boards were also made available for sale, with proceeds going toward cancer research. It was a very way for supporters to contribute to a serious cause.

This wasn’t the first time the Little Legs Foundation, a charity focused on childhood brain cancer, had tried to break the record. In an earlier attempt, they had missed the mark by just 30 players, falling short of the previous record of 733. But this time, with community spirit and determinatio, they succeeded.

While the Vasiliou family hasn’t confirmed plans for another large-scale Monopoly event, they’ve said that they’re open to future challenges.
