On May 7, the Indian Army carried out strikes on nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The military operation, “Operation Sindoor” is in response to the terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 where gunmen killed several men after questioning their religion. The attack left 25 women widowed, including one who had just gotten married. The operation targeted Pakistan-based terror camps.

It is named "Operation Sindoor" after sindoor, which is traditionally worn by married Hindu women on their heads. The name reflects the loss of the women whose husbands were killed before their eyes. An image shared by the Indian Army showed the word "Sindoor" with one 'O' shaped like a bowl of vermilion, with some spilt over to show the violence of the incident. The caption read: "Justice is served. Jai Hind."

Here are some of the women who lost their husbands in the incident.

Aishanya Dwivedi lost her husband, Shubham Dwivedi, a tourist from Uttar Pradesh. The couple had been married for just two months before the Pahalgam attack. As the news of Operation Sindoor came in, Aishanya said, "I want to thank Prime Minister Modi for avenging my husband's death. Our family had trust in him and he has kept our trust alive. This is the real tribute to my husband. Wherever my husband is, he will be at peace today.”

Himanshi Narwal is the young wife of Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, a 26-year-old Indian Navy officer from Haryana who was killed during his honeymoon in Pahalgam. The couple had married just a week earlier, on April 16, 2025. 

Shital Kalathiya’s husband, Shailesh Kalathiya, was a banker from Surat, Gujarat. He was killed while on a family trip to celebrate his birthday. Shital and their two children, a son and a daughter, were with him at the time of the attack.

Sohini Adhikari lost her husband, Bitan Adhikari, an IT professional from Kolkata. He had been working in the US and had returned to India for a holiday. Sohini, Bitan, and their three-and-a-half-year-old son Hridaan were enjoying the scenic meadow in Pahalgam when he was shot.

Kajalben Parmar’s husband, Yatishbhai Parmar, ran a salon in Bhavnagar, Gujarat. The family had travelled to Kashmir, attending a Ram Katha by Morari Bapu before heading to Pahalgam, where the tragedy occurred.

Pragati Jagdale is the wife of Santosh Jagdale from Pune, Maharashtra. He was among those killed in the April 22 massacre. Pragati is now raising their young daughter, Asavari, alone. Speaking about Operation Sindoor, she shared, "I cannot forget that day. I cry every day. We were waiting for Prime Minister Modi to take such action, and he has given them a befitting reply. Terrorists should be eliminated.”

She added, “It's a befitting reply after the way those terrorists erased the vermilion. On hearing the name of this operation, I got tears in my eyes. I sincerely thank the government."
