Allegations and Investigation

Ghahraman is currently under police investigation after facing three allegations of theft from boutique clothing shops. The incidents reportedly took place at a luxury clothing store in Auckland and a high-end clothes retailer in Wellington, both occurring in late 2023.

In her official statement, Ghahraman, a former human rights lawyer and the first refugee elected to New Zealand's parliament, attributed her actions to personal stress and trauma. Acknowledging that her behaviour was inexplicable, she expressed remorse, admitting to falling short of the standards expected of a public figure. Notably, Ghahraman emphasized the impact of work-related stress on her mental health, leading to actions she deemed "completely out of character."

Mental Health and Stress Factors

Work-related stress has been a recurrent theme in Ghahraman's story, culminating in her admission of having acted irrationally. The Green Party co-leaders, James Shaw and Marama Davidson, shed light on the relentless threats and pressures Ghahraman faced, including threats of sexual violence, physical harm, and death threats. This additional layer of stress, particularly intensified during her involvement in pro-Palestine protests, highlights the challenges faced by public figures in the world of politics.

The Impact on Ghahraman's Portfolios

Ghahraman's resignation, while deemed necessary in light of the allegations, raises concerns about the void it leaves in the Green Party's representation. Co-leader Marama Davidson lamented the loss of a "lone voice" in many of Ghahraman's portfolios, emphasizing the significance of her contributions. This prompts reflection on the broader conversation about the treatment of women with public profiles, especially women of colour, in the political landscape.
