While there's another thing a lot of people can add to their celebratory list for their V-day it, of course, doesn't sound celebratory for people whose names will now identify with the cockroaches.

In the lineup for Valentine's Day, a popular zoo in Canada is inviting applications from people who wish to name a cockroach after someone they dislike.

Name A Roach Initiative

The Toronto Zoo Wildlife Conservancy announced on its social media that it has launched a new initiative titled name-a-roach. The initiative allows people to name a cockroach after anyone they are irritated by.

"Roses are red; violets are blue…Is there someone in your life that’s bugging you? Give them goosebumps by naming a cockroach in their honour this Valentine's Day," read the tweet.

It doesn't necessarily have to be an annoying ex, says the zoo representative, it can be an irritating neighbour or a bully. Some way to vent your feelings, eh?

The application process requires people to go online on the portal and click on 'Dedicate your donation,' after which, they will be asked to fill in the black with a name after the text 'In honour of'. The users will receive a digital receipt with the roach's name. Sounds a bit mean now, doesn't it?

The cockroach naming ceremony requires a minimum donation of 25 dollars.

The zoo, however, declared that hate speech will not be tolerated on the platform as it's just a "fun, venting initiative." However, the Toronto Zoo said there are certain limits to the process as hate speech and profanity will not be tolerated.

Mixed response to the campaign

While some social media users appreciated the fun initiative, some users were put off by the campaign they termed as 'insensitive.' "Brilliant idea, please keep us updated with the top ten names you get," wrote one. Another social media user called out the zoo authorities for creating a campaign that lacked sensitivity and respect.
