Mysuru Gangrape: Karnataka Home Minster Draws Flack For Blaming Survivor

Araga Jnanendra, Home Minister of Karnataka, questioned the survivor of Mysuru gangrape case on Thursday. Making remarks on the woman, he said, " what was she doing there at 7 pm."

The woman and her companion were travelling to Chamundi hills near Mysuru city where they were attacked by robbers. When the couple refused to give them money, the woman was raped and her companion was beaten up. The couple is currently going through treatment in a local hospital.

Jnanendra in his statement also joked about the rape when he attacked the Congress party for politicising the case by saying “the Congress is trying to rape me”.

The minister said, "The rape happened in Mysuru but Congress trying to gain political mileage from the incident. It was an inhuman incident. The girl and her friend must have gone to a deserted place there, they should not have gone there."

Congress leader Brijesh Kalappa said that the Home Minister is trying to trivilialise the case and added that he could 'hang his boots and leave."

S Prakash, BJP leader said, "Any rape incident is a sensitive incident. One has to react responsibly and it should not be politicised. Congress is trying to politicise the issue."

The crime took place on Tuesday this week and the police came to know about it on Wednesday. So far, no arrest has been made in the case as the police is still trying to identify the accused persons.

The Chief Minister of the state, Basavaraj Bommai has directed the Director-General of Police Praveen Sood to initiate steps to arrest the accused persons. The Home Minister Araga Jnanendra had called it an unfortunate incident on Wednesday. He had said that the police authorities have been told to consider the matter seriously and take strict actions.

As per the FIR lodged at the Alanahally Police Station, six persons have been called accused. The Commissioner of Police, Dr Chandragupta has said that they have formed a team to probe the case. The survivor's statement has not been recorded yet, as she is reportedly under treatment.

The National Commission for Women has also taken cognisance of the case and asked the authorities to ensure that the culprits are identified and booked under relevant sections of the law.
