In a historic move on the eve of International Women's Day, Mizoram MLA Baryl Vanneihsangi became the first woman to preside over the 40-member State Assembly. On March 7, the Zorem People's Movement leader took the seat of the Speaker in an Assembly session. According to local reports, the milestone has been hailed as an inspiration for women in Mizoram, "where traditional gender roles have often relegated women to the side-lines of politics." State chief minister and ZPM top leader Lalduhoma deemed it a “significant historical landmark for the Mizoram assembly.”

Lalduhoma said that the move "underscores a momentous stride towards gender inclusivity in governance," local news organisation, The Mizoram Post reported. The report added, "Vanneihsangi’s ascension to the helm of the assembly sends a powerful message of empowerment and equality. It reflects a progressive shift towards embracing diversity and fostering inclusive governance practices.”

Mizoram's First Woman Speaker

Baryl Vanneihsangi became Mizoram's first woman Assembly Speaker on March 7, etching a path for more women in the State to delve into leadership. Last year, the State witnessed three women legislators elected for the first time, Vanneihsangi of the Zorem People's Movement (ZPM) being one of them. She secured an impressive tally of 9,370 votes, triumphing over the Mizo National Front (MNF) candidate, F. Lalnunmawia.

In December 2023, Vanneihsangi's party, the ZPM, emerged victorious by securing 27 out of the 40 seats in the Mizoram Assembly, effectively dethroning the MNF, which was reduced to a mere 10 seats. This marked a significant turning point in Mizoram's political landscape.

The 32-year-old also made history as the youngest MLA in the State. Before stepping into the political arena, Vanneihsangi served as a corporator in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC). She has a Master's in Arts degree from the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong, Meghalaya. She has also worked as a television anchor and also possesses an impressive social media following with over 2.5 lakh Instagram followers.

The young leader recognises the significance of digital presence in today's era, leveraging her skills in public engagement to hone her leadership skills. This has allowed her to seamlessly transition from the arena of media to politics, reflecting her versatility and ability to connect with people on diverse platforms.
