Carmen Salinas, star of Mexican television and film, died Thursday following a stroke, her family announced. The 82-year-old had been in a coma during her final days and was receiving intensive care treatment. Condolences are pouring in for the iconic personality whose death is being mourned by fans as a big loss to the Mexican entertainment industry.
The statement from Salinas' family said they were grateful for the messages of support they were receiving. Salinas dominated film and television screens with an impressive career of six decades. Her comedic timing was one of the most defining features of her acting oeuvre.
Her best known works include films Calzonzin inspector, Bellas de noche, Tívoli and La otra familia. She was last seen in the television show Mi fortuna es amarte, which premiered this year, in the role of Magos Domínguez Negrete.
She also had a political stint with Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party, for which she was a federal legislator. She won a seat on the parliament in 2015 and her campaigns were focused on gender, equality and health.

Reports last month, quoting Salinas' family, said she had had a cerebrovascular event and was in a coma at a clinic in Mexico City. Her condition at the time was described as delicate and she had been needing respiratory assistance. A godson of the actor told the media that the stroke had caused "irreversible damage" to her and doctors were saying she would not wake up.

Salinas' death has prompted a flood of messages grieving the loss on social media, including from her colleagues from the Mexican film industry. Actor Eugenio Derbez, sharing a picture of himself with Salinas, said, "Today we have to say goodbye with deep sadness to a woman who made history on television and film in Mexico. Her charisma filled any place where she was with light and that is how I will remember her."
"Rest In Peace Carmen Salinas. you were everyone’s mom in telenovelas & a comforting figure in my adolescence," poet Yesika Salgado wrote.
"RIP Carmen Salinas. What a Queen, what a Spanish legend. Long Live our TV abuelita," one Twitter user wrote. "i really feel like part of my childhood just left with Carmen Salinas," another said. "not carmen salinas :( she was the abuelita in one of my fav novelas growing up this is so heartbreaking," one wrote.
