Aminah Hayat: Sydney Teen Allegedly Murdered By Her Partner, Found In Acid Tub

Aminah Hayat had moved from Bangladesh to Australia only last year. This past Sunday, she was found dead in a bathtub filled with acid in the Sydney apartment she shared with her partner Meraj Zafar, as per reports. Hayat, 19, was allegedly killed by Zafar. He handed himself over to the police on Monday and is presently in custody, charged with murder.

Hayat was in her second year of university and was studying to become a surgeon. She reportedly met Zafar not more than 20 weeks ago. The two decided to tie the knot days prior to Hayat's death and move in together soon after. Their whirlwind romance was disapproved by parents on both sides.

According to 7 News, Hayat's parents said they lost touch with her after she moved in with Zafar.

Reports suggest Zafar had told locals around in the couple's North Parramatta neighbourhood that he was from Pakistan. Sources quoted remember Hayat as being a reserved but pleasant woman.

Responding to concerns raised by Hayat's family on the evening of January 30, police barged into the couple's home to find the teen girl lying in the bathroom, allegedly in a tub of corrosive liquid. Hayat is believed to have been killed a day before she was found, around afternoon.

As per Daily MailZafar was seen fleeing in a truck from the scene of the crime after authorities were alerted of Hayat's killing. A manhunt was launched to locate him before he turned himself in January 31.

Cops investigating the case said the scene found in the bathroom was "awful" and have confirmed the presence of chemicals at the site.

"He’s distraught about being in custody. It’s just a matter of whether he wishes to fight these charges or not, but I will obtain those instructions," Zafar's lawyer Mohamad Sakr was quoted saying, adding that his client did not intend to make any comment on the murder allegations levelled against him.

The truck Zafar had been driving was seized in Greenacre.
