52-Yr-Old Granny Is Uber’s First Female Bike Taxi Driver In Punjab
Uber has recently started a bike taxi service in Punjab under an employment program. And guess what? The first driver of the new bike taxi service is a woman. Not just that, the woman driver, Paramjeet Kaur, is a 52-year-old grandmother!
The state is now motivating people to use their bikes or scooters to provide rides to people under the ‘Apni Gaddi, Apna Rozgar’ programme. About 100 bike taxi riders have started operating in Mohali, Kharar and Zirakpur.
The middle-aged Kaur was initially hesitant to join as a bike taxi driver, but then decided to give it a shot.
Carrying more than ten people every day isn’t an easy job for the 52-year-old, but it’s with sheer determination that she manages to do so. And at the end of the day, all that Kaur requires is a smile from her clients.
“A senior citizen I ferried on Monday (July 24) as part of test run commended me for taking this step. He said more women should step out,” said Kaur, Hindustan Times reported. The newly appointed driver dresses in the traditional Punjabi attire of salwar kameez.
Kaur, who is a mother of three, added, “Though my family asked me not to slog hard at this age, I thought it is a good way to supplement the family income. I am very happy to become part of the new taxi service.”

Kaur lost her husband when she was quite young, and she raised her children single-handedly.
“Some time ago, I got a message on my mobile about the company’s new bike taxi service in Punjab. A little hesitant initially, I accepted the offer later,” she claimed.
Talking about the challenges, Kaur mentioned, “I am quite sure that people will be nice to me and appreciate my hard work.”
We wish Kaur good luck and hope to see many more such women from the state taking up such jobs to be financially independent!
