Flag bearers at Tokyo Olympics, Mary Kom

Mary Kom has won gold! Yet again, the star has showed the power of punches and clinched the gold medal in the Asian Boxing Championships. In fact, Wednesday was a great day for India at the championship. India's Sonia Lather won the silver medal in the 57-kg category.

Kom defeated DPR Korea’s Kim Hyang Mi in the final, scoring 5-0.

Olympic bronze medallist and five-time world champion MC Mary Kom dominated the game against a younger North Korean rival.

From the beginning, both boxers were in an attacking mood. To get an early lead, Kom landed a number of blows but Kim stood strong and got a few punches of her own before the round ended. However, in the second and third rounds, Kom overpowered her opponent.

It was real fun seeing this extraordinary player knock down a young talent. “Magnificent Mary”  has returned to her preferred weight category after five years of competing in the 51-kg category. She was disqualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics, but this tournament is a reminder that there’s still fire in the legendary boxer’s belly. She yet again proved what is it to be the best in the industry and hence added another feather in her cap.

Silver medallist Sonia Lather fought brilliantly against Mirzaeva Yodgoroy of Uzbekistan in the 57-kg category in the semi-final bout to enter the final. She faced Jin Junhua of China in the final but had to settle for a silver.

This is Kom's first international gold medal since the 2014 Asian Games. Following the win, she became the first Indian woman boxer to win gold in the Women’s Flyweight (51 kg) category. It is also her first medal in over a year.

This is Kom’s sixth medal in the Asian Women’s Boxing Championships, fifth gold medal (four gold medals and one silver medal in previous editions of the tournament) and first Asian gold in the 48-kg category
