A 30-year-old Sikh woman allegedly died by suicide at her Richmond-based residence in New York on August 3, accusing her husband of domestic violence. Mandeep Kaur, 30, shared a video where she is heard saying that she cannot tolerate any more violence at the hands of her husband Ranjodhbeer Singh Sandhu and has decided to commit suicide. Both Mandeep and her husband are from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh.

Kaur is survived by her two daughters, aged four and six, whose custody currently lies with Sandhu. In her video, Kaur also named Sandhu's parents as equally responsible who reportedly, even after knowing about their son’s wrong-doings, never protested or intervened.

  • In a video posted by @TheKaurMovement, Kaur described she endured violence and abuse throughout her married life. Showing her bruises and blood clots, she explained how her in-laws encouraged the abuse. "It has been eight years. I have tried my best. I was beaten up every day. I have been suffering him and his beatings, thinking that he will improve someday. But no, he beat me up for eight years. Had extra-marital affairs. We lived there (in India) for the first two and a half years and it was hell."
  • Kaur’s younger sister Kuldeep spoke with The Indian Express and said Kaur and Sandhu had gotten married 8 years ago. She claimed that Sandhu had been deported from New Zealand and later travelled to the United States and started a transport business.
  • Videos purportedly narrating Kaur’s torture for dowry by her husband and in-laws, which she reportedly shot minutes before ending her life, are doing rounds on the Internet.
  • In another video, Sandhu can be seen strangling Kaur as their children cried and begged him to stop beating her.
  • Mandeep's father Jaspal Singh recalled Sandhu's torture in an interview and said, “Soon after the marriage, in-laws started demanding dowry. They often asked my daughter for ₹25 lakh cash and a luxury car. When she refused, they used to torture her and convey their demand to us."
  • A case has been registered against Ranjodh’s parents under Dowry Act and for abetment of suicide (Section 306 of the IPC), said Ravindra Verma, SHO, Najibabad police station, Bijnore. “Mandeep’s parents said a case had also been registered against her husband in New York", he added.
  • A campaign, “Justice for Mandeep”, has been launched in Richmond and people are protesting in Richmond demanding that her husband be booked. A similar campaign has been launched on social media too
