A woman has accused her husband of trying to sell her and his four children, which include three girls, for Rs 5 lakh at Koilakuntla in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. The incident garnered attention when the woman reached out to the ICDS officials in Nandyal, reported TOI.

What happened?

38-year-old Pasupuleti Maddilety is married to 35-year-old Venkatamma. Over the course of the 20-year-old marriage, they had five children, four girls and one boy.

A liquor and gambling addict, Maddilety had sold his elder daughter for Rs 1.5 lakh to one of his relatives. He put forth a condition in front of the relative and said that he should marry the girl whenever she is ready for marriage. The daughter is now 17 years old.

Soon, he ran out of that money and wanted some more. This is when he thought of selling his wife and other children.

Venkatamma has alleged that he fixed a deal with his elder brother to sell her, three other girls and the son for Rs 5 lakh.

But his elder brother Busi insisted upon an agreement signed by her, which she refused.

After this, her husband reportedly beat her up, forcing her to sign the agreement. She managed to escape from there and went to Nandyal, her native place.

She then filed a complaint with the Nandyal Taluqa police.

A case has been registered under Section 498 A of IPC. The inspector of Nandyal Taluqa Ramesh told TOI that they have registered a case and investigating the matter. The children have been rescued and investigations are underway.
