Odisha Gangrape: The main accused in the Odhisha gangrape case of the wife of a former Indian Forest Officer has been arrested after 22 years.
Biban Biswal alias Bibekananda Biswal was arrested from the Aamby Valley City Project near Navi Mumbai. Biswal was arrested by the Commissionerate Police Police for Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
Sudhanshu Sanangi, the Commissioner of Police who lead the team stated that, “Both the CBI and the Odisha police had tried hard to catch hold of the accused but all efforts had gone in vain. For 22 years, his whereabouts remained an unsolved question for many. Some said he had died.”
The ‘Silent Viper’ operation was launched in an effort to track Biswal down, after Sarangi went through old files and realised that Biban was a known criminal of his area. It was discovered that Biban would often send money to his family and occasionally even visited his village, Naranpur in Barang area.
While Biban’s two accomplices were arrested with 17 days following the incident and sentenced to life imprisonment. Biban managed to evade to police for 22 years until now. With the help of the Mumbai police, a team went to the Aamby Valley City Project. Biban started running even though the police team was in plainclothes, and was caught immediately.
Speaking to The Hindu, the survivor stated that, “it has been a long battle of 22 years. I had lost hopes that the criminal would be caught. It brings happiness to me. I am relieved.”
