Dev D Actor Mahie Gill Joins Bharatiya Janata Party Ahead Of Punjab Polls

Actor Mahie Gill makes a fore into politics. The award-winning actor has joined the political party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on February 7. However, last year, she had campaigned for the Congress.

The Dev D actor Gill campaigned for Harmohinder Singh Lucky from Ward No. 2 of the Congress party in December last year. Back then, she was not actively involved in politics and was just supporting Lucky, who is her childhood friend. She had reportedly said that she has no plans of joining politics at the time but may do so in future.

Today ANI tweeted, "Bollywood and Punjabi actress Mahie Gill & Punjabi actor-singer Hobby Dhaliwal join BJP in the presence of Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar, Union Minister-Punjab BJP incharge Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Punjab BJP in-charge Dushyant Gautam."

The campaigning for the upcoming Punjab elections is in full swing as BJP aspires to win in the state. The Assembly polls are scheduled for the state to take place from February 10. It is interesting to see when and how does Gill enters politics as the date for polls get closer.

Last year, she had said, "At present, I have no such intention. But maybe in the coming time. I may join a political party. Who knows what the future holds." The actor marked her Bollywood debut in 2003 with the film Hawayein and went on to become popular by playing the role of modern-day Paro in the film by Anurag Kashyap, Dev D in 2009. Other than these, she has been part of Dabangg 2Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3 and Durgamati.

Other than films, she has also been part of the Over-The-Top platform and debuted with the MX Player upcoming show Raktanchal 2 and Your Honour. For her critically acclaimed role in Dev D, she won the Filmfare Best Actress (Critic) Award.

Gill was born in 1975 and hails from Chandigarh in Punjab. She is from a Punjabi Jat Sikh family and has done her masters in theatre from Panjab University at Chandigarh in 1998. She kept her foot in the industry with modelling and soon was able to enter into films. In her debut film, she features opposite Babbu Mann.

Just before the lockdown in 2020, she appeared in Doordarshan, which was released in February 2020. The 45-year-old actor's career graph is not just limited to films, she has also been part of web series like Apharan, Fixerr, 1962: The War in the Hills, amongst others.

She married a businessman when she was 17 but things did not work out and they got divorced. In July 2019, the actor revealed that she was in a live-in relationship and had given birth to her daughter Veronica in 2016. In an interview, Gill spoke about the reason why she does not post her daughter's picture on social media. She said that these reasons are personal and she is a private and shy person.

There was a rumour that her daughter was born out of surrogacy, the actor said, "She is my biological child. When I got pregnant, I took a break for a year from acting since no interesting project came my way. This, my pregnancy never came in the public eyes. Then Veronica was born in August 2016, and I got busy with her and started losing weight as well till the time I got my next project which was Sahib Biwi Gangster 3 (2018)."
