Maheshwari Chauhan Bags Bronze for India At Asian Shotgun Championship

Shooter Maheshwari Chauhan clinched a bronze at the Asian Shotgun Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Friday (Aug 11). With this feat, Maheshwari has become India’s first women’s skeet individual medallist at a top international competition.

Maheshwari (21) — the youngest of the 15-member Indian team — shot 40 in the final round to grab a bronze. With this win, she won her first international medal in senior category.

Maheshwari had topped the qualification round with a score of 68 out of 75. However, in the final, she faced tough fighters like Meng Wei of China and Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit of Thailand who pushed her to settle for the bronze. A group of six shooters from India was in the final round.

Meng, who was one of the finalists at the Rio Olympics, currently is at world ranking 4 with a score of 55, while Sutiya (who is a multiple World Cup medal winner) ranks 5 with a shot 54.

Meanwhile, the Indian team of — Rashmmi Rathore, Saniya Sheikh and Maheshwari — got the silver, firing shot at 190. They finished behind behind gold medallists China, who shot 195. Hosts Kazakhstan took home the bronze shooting 185.

Rashmi, another Indian to shoot in the final, finished fourth with a score of 32 after she qualified by shooting 64.

India’s tally now stands at two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
