The state government took the decision after considering the fact that during the lockdown the students have lost their academic hours. All across the nation, schools have been shut since mid-March 2020 as a prevention measure to curb the coronavirus pandemic.

Varsha Gaikwad, the State Minister of School Education, took to Twitter to make the announcement today.

“In view of the ongoing situation due to #Covid 19, all state board students across Maharashtra state from Class 1st to Class 8th will be promoted to the next class without any examinations. A decision regarding students of class 9th and 11th will soon be taken,” she wrote.

As of, no decision has been taken for students of classes 11th and 9th. Reportedly, students had demanded online exams for these classes as the entire academic year was held through the online mode. Gaikwad also announced that the decision regarding the mentioned classes will be announced soon.

On March 2, Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray asserted that a lockdown can not be ruled out if the situation doesn’t get better and indicated that stricter restrictions can be imposed.

"I am talking to experts on whether there is an alternative to a complete lockdown and how to break the virus chain," he said.

Meanwhile, the State Board exams for 10th and 12th students will be held as announced earlier. The board exams will be held on a curtailed syllabus to assure relaxation to the students. In addition, the board has also allowed the appearing students to take the exam in their respective schools.

Previously the board announced that the students who have been affected by COVID-19 will be allowed to appear for special exams scheduled in June.
